July 31 – August 4, 2019
Phoenix, Arizona

The goal of this four-day leadership development conference is to equip SHPE’s regional and chapter leaders with the skills and knowledge for success. We encourage two leaders from each SHPE chapter to attend this important annual meeting. Every participant will leave with practical, easy-to-apply leadership strategies.

About NILA

For over 30 years, the National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) has been SHPE’s premier program for developing its members into relevant, responsible, and skilled leaders to ensure that Hispanics are represented as influential and capable drivers in the STEM workforce, the Hispanic community, and the nation. NILA is SHPE’s response to sponsors and partners seeking highly skilled Hispanics in STEM with the talent to lead teams and drive innovation and social change.

NILA is designed to teach and inspire SHPE’s regional and chapter leaders to serve in volunteer leadership roles of increasing responsibility within SHPE’s nationwide ecosystem.

This interactive workshop offers hands-on, practical strategies regarding SHPE’s operational framework and organizational governance so that our Chapter leaders can effectively advance SHPE’s mission and vision.

SHPE’s volunteer leaders are the heartbeat of our organization. They enable program success at the local, regional, and national levels, supporting SHPE’s national strategy and mission: an empowered Hispanic community that realizes its fullest potential and impacts the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.

Across the NILA curriculum the following high-level objectives will include 3 programmatic components:

Teach and inspire participants to become competent, authentic, and committed leaders that positively advance themselves and their communities.

Empower and engage participants to serve as positive change agents that work collaboratively with community partners and stakeholders.

Educate and prepare participants to lead within SHPE in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.

NILA prepares attendees to lead and manage diverse teams by preparing them to:

  • Advance and increase leadership skills to achieve desired results
  • Cultivate and refine management skills that inspire, lead, and mobilize stakeholders
  • Develop business acumen skills to develop strategies and execute implementation plans
  • Foster succession planning by equipping current leaders to nurture and mentor future leaders
  • Refine and enhance communication and interpersonal skills

“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.”

– John Maxwell
