Before you arrive in Phoenix, we need you to do some pre-conference work. Your required assignment is to watch five webinars and take a quiz for four of them before arriving in Phoenix.
We recommend watching the 45-minute webinars LIVE so you can ask questions. All webinars will be made available on the NILA website for those who cannot make the live broadcasts.
Here are the 2019 NILA Rules of Behavior that you agreed to when you registered. Thank you in advance for adhering to them!
- Students: $425 (up to $200 travel stipend)
- Professionals: $475 (up to $150 travel stipend)
- Advisors: $475 (up to $150 travel stipend)
Again this year we are providing a travel stipend to help you with costs to attend.
Students: Be a PAID and APPROVED SHPE E-Board member for the 2019-2020 fiscal year to register and renew your membership on July 1, 2019 to attend. APPROVED resume created on the SHPEConnect system.
Professionals: Be a PAID and APPROVED SHPE E-Board member for the 2019-2020 fiscal year to register and renew your membership on July 1, 2019 to attend.
- Only two SHPE Chapter E-Board Members can attend.
- All attendees must attend mandatory virtual webinars prior to the start of NILA.
- All attendees must submit their Chapter Management Tools prior to NILA.
NOTE: NILA IS AN INTENSE PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR THE ATTENDEE TO BE PRESENT FOR THE DURATION, STARTING ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 31. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE, PLEASE SELECT ANOTHER REPRESENTATIVE TO ATTEND FROM YOUR CHAPTER, AS MISSING ANY OF THE SCANNED EVENTS WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE CCLP (CERTIFIED CHAPTER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM).

All registrations will be processed online via SHPEConnect. We do not have a paper registration form available. However, you can print your receipt from SHPEConnect. If you require an invoice, please contact [email protected].
Payment by credit card via SHPEConnect only.
For university issued checks, please contact [email protected]. Include “School-Issued Payment for NILA 2019” in the subject line.
DO NOT submit your payment transaction more than once. If you receive an error submitting your credit card payment, please send an email with the error message to [email protected].
Online registration checks if you are a PAID and APPROVED SHPE member for the 2019-2020 membership year. If you, recently renewed, please allow an hour for the system to refresh and read your active membership.

A notice will be emailed immediately from SHPE confirming registration.
Professional and student chapters are guaranteed two chapter executive board members to attend NILA. Registration and payment are required by the registration deadline, June 21, 2019. Additional chapter executive board members will be placed on a waiting list on a first come, first served basis and will be notified on June 15, 2019 if they may register.
Chapter executive board members do not have the option to register a second officer or an officer other than themselves on SHPEConnect.

SHPE offers a travel sponsorship to attend NILA to eligible chapters.
Deadline to Apply: May 19th. More information on the sponsorship application will be available, May 7th.
You can do a fundraiser with your chapter or formally contact local companies to request financial assistance. Reach out to your Regional Vice President or Professional Local Chapters for possible sponsorship opportunities.
All cancellations must be received by email [email protected]. Include “Cancellation for NILA 2019” in the subject line.
Cancellations received by July 1, 2019 11:59 PM PT, are eligible for a 50% refund of registration fees. Cancellations received after July 1, 2019 11:59 PT, are not eligible for a refund of registration fees.
If you are a travel sponsorship recipient and you CANCEL or are a “NO SHOW”, you will be invoiced for full payment of your airfare stipend if your flight has been reserved. We will consider a replacement to attend on behalf of your chapter. Please send cancellation request to [email protected].
If chapter elections have not taken place, you may register and submit payment for your chapter and submit the name of the participant after elections (by July 1, 2019) to [email protected].
You are allowed to send a replacement from your chapter if you are not able to attend. All replacements and name changes will be accepted until July 1, 2019 11:59 PM PT. Please send request to [email protected].
Due to the fact that the educational curriculum is updated every 3 years, attendance is restricted to once every three years. However, another executive board member can attend on behalf of your chapter.

Travel arrangements will be made by the attending leader(s).
Hotel arrangements are made by SHPE National and require no further action from the attendee. We will provide your hotel confirmation one week before the conference. Students will be housed two per room and professionals will be housed two per room.
All local members must stay at the NILA hotel. The NILA conference prohibits attendees going in/out of the conference.

It takes approximately 15 minutes from the airport to the hotel. We recommend Lyft or Uber for transport, which costs approximately $20-$25.
Once your travel is confirmed, submit your airfare receipt (if driving send your planned route map) and a completed SHPE Travel Stipend Form here. Book as soon as possible to get the lowest cost airfare available.
Your travel stipend check will be handed to you onsite at NILA. If you do not submit your receipt/map and reimbursement form before you arrive to the conference, you will not be eligible for reimbursement post-conference. Deadline to submit is July 21st.
If your registration is being sponsored by your university or company, you are not eligible for a travel stipend.
Yes, Phoenix in the summer is hot, but the old axiom is that “it’s a dry heat,” and there’s truth to that. The Sonoran Desert’s super-low humidity means 90°F temperatures (32°C) feel quite nice, and the arid climate causes perspiration to evaporate quickly, keeping you cooler and drier. Average temperature to expect outdoors is 104°F during the day and 81°F at night. A/C will be blasting indoors, so be sure to bring a jacket or sweater.
Be sure to drink a lot of water. A LOT of water. And be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion which include headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea. If you do not feel well, please let a SHPE staff member know right away.
It is very hot in Phoenix in August, but very cold in the air-conditioned meeting rooms. Please plan on business casual for Wednesday through Saturday morning, with a jacket or sweater as needed. Plan on business professional attire for the group photo on Saturday afternoon. And business professional or cocktail/formal attire for the commencement dinner on Saturday night. Please also bring appropriate golf attire for Saturday morning (ex. shorts or khakis, short sleeve shirt with a collar).
Please refer to this Business Insider article for a better understanding of “business casual.” For the avoidance of doubt, attendees should never be in jeans/denim, t-shirts, tank tops, athletic/work-out clothes, or flip flops at any scheduled NILA functions. Attendees are also encouraged to bring an appropriate swimsuit to enjoy the resort swimming pools.

All SHPE events with student members participating are alcohol-free. Alcohol is sometimes served at SHPE professional member events where all participants are over the age of 21.
